Abstract
This study attempted to find out both the mediating effects of rumination on the relationships between depression and suicidal ideation and the moderating effects of decentering effects on the relationships between rumination and suicidal ideation. Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), Experiences Questionnaire(EQ) and Scale for Suicidal Ideation(SSI) were administered to the five hundred eighty undergraduate students recruited from Seoul, Gyunggi and other areas. The results of the study are as follows: First, the rumination (brooding and reflection) showed a partial mediation effect on the relationships between depression and suicidal ideation. Second, the decentering ability moderated the suicidal ideation through the interaction with rumination. In other words, the participants with high ability of decentering was able to lower the level of suicidal ideation, although the level of rumination, including brooding and reflection was high. The results of the study suggest that the rumination tends to increase suicidal ideation risk by mediating relationships between depression and suicidal ideation, and decentering ability functions as the protective factor for reducing suicidal ideation through the interaction with rumination. Therefore, the risk of suicidal ideation is likely to be high, if the students have a tendency to ruminate in order to escape the depressed mood or to solve problems when they are in depressed mood. However, they are able to reduce suicidal ideation, if they focus on decentering and take a perspective of their problems. The limitations and ideas for the further study were suggested.
